About the event

This retreat is inspired by the painting of Mary Magdalene housed in the crypt of the Holy Cross Monastery by Toc Fetch. It shows Magdalene having emerged alone from the tomb holding the alabaster jar. Her invitational eyes follow you wherever you sit or stand, and they are imploring you to come and be anointed. It is visually very powerful and holds a deeper unique story and invitation for each of us. Magdalene will be our guide into that unique story.

Our retreat explorations will take us into the womb-tomb of our own nature, that spacious quality of the womb that invites us to know the ever pregnant life waiting to be born from within. The tomb can represent the solid walls we have created to keep life out. We will gently explore what is needed so that we can emerge.

Other questions we will bring forward: What does it mean to be anointed in today’s world? Traditionally, “messiah” means the anointed one. If Magdalene is seeking to anoint us, what is she asking of us? What is she inviting us to enter?

We will engage with sacred texts and stories about Magdalene, enter into meditation and chant, gentle movement, and seal in all of the blessings from the weekend with The Sacred Wedding Feast, a eucharistic service joining the Christ-Logos (Yeshua representing the masculine) and the Christ-Sophia (Magdalene representing the feminine) within each one of us.
