Balance

"Life is a balance between holding on and letting go"

- Rumi

I have been contemplating balance lately.

The questions have become:

What am I grasping onto?

What am I shunning or pushing away?

And what is that sweet spot of flow in between?

No grasping, no pushing away, but allowing the flow of life to move through me while maintaining my grounded balance

Just feeling into this brings an inner quiet

Not passive nor necessarily active but in a state of calm readiness to go where inner wisdom dictates

Do you know when to hold on?

And do you know when to let go?

I remember many years ago a beautiful dance colleague asked this question:

"How do you know when it is time to dig into your tenacity and to hold on, and when it is time to surrender and let go?" She had achieved much through her discipline for her profession, holding on, when at times she felt like giving up. And it had paid off. But she was being faced with a situation that was providing many difficulties. Should she hold on, or should she let go?

St. Teresa gives us a wise answer to this question:

Go back to the original inspiration for what you are doing. Was it divinely inspired?

If so, keep going.

Of course, Teresa was talking about a very specific circumstance

When we have devoted a lifetime to something there is always an expiry date or at least a winding down date.

And we could add: If your soul called you to this work then keep listening and follow

Right now, there are moralities pertaining to human life we need to direly hold onto

There may be less than compassionate attitudes towards perpetrators of immorality that we need to let go

These above two are not mutually exclusive

Each one of us needs to find a balance of mind and heart in our current world

And we will need to continue to do so as our evolutionary life on this planet unfolds

It is a deeply emotional time but can we move deeper than our emotions to the place of balanced wisdom?
